Ethics in Technology and the Future of Morality

This event will be part of TUHH’s flagship series "Lectures for Future" and marks the beginning of my appointment at TUHH as well as of our new Institute for Ethics in Technology. Prof. Dominic Wilkinson (University of Oxford), Prof. Alena Buyx (Technical University of Munich, Chair of the German Ethics Council) and Dr Andrew Graham (University of Oxford) will contribute to the event.

  • Lecture by Prof. Maximilian Kiener: (TUHH): "Ethics in Technology and the Future of Morality"

Guest talk at HCDS - NLP for Low-resource African Languages

Spread the word, on Monday, August 11, 2025, from 12:30-13:10, we will have a guest talk about "NLP for Low-resource African Languages" with Dr. Shamsuddeen Hassen Muhammed. Dr Hassen is a Google DeepMind Academic Fellow and an Advanced Research Fellow at Imperial College London, an Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) at the Faculty of Computing, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria, and a Visiting Professor at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Cameroon and South Africa,
as well as at York St John University.

He was our long time collaborator for Africa NLP and he will present the progress on African low-resource languages NLP.

The talk will be at HCDS meeting room, Science City, Albert-Einstein-Ring 8-10, 22761 Hamburg, Germany

If you are unable to come in person, we will also share a zoom meeting.

Understanding learning in humans and neural networks

We are excited to welcome Chris Summerfield from U Oxford to Hamburg for at talk next week. Chris is a fantastic speaker and the talk is open to everyone interested. 
 
Abstract:
I will discuss the computational mechanisms that underlie learning in biological and artificial networks. I will argue that both humans and neural networks trained with gradient descent show simplicity biases, a tendency to learn generalities before specifics in a dataset. I will show that this path-dependent learning explains why humans benefit from curricula that prioritise simplicity before complexity. I will discuss data showing that the course of learning and development is supported by a transition from high-dimensional representations, permitting flexible computation, to low-dimensional representations,  permitting generalisation and rule-learning. Finally,  I will provide evidence that curricula help ‘unlearn’ ingrained patterns and undo established learning, to keep learning flexible over the lifespan.
